Louisville’s Kevin Ware after breaking leg: “You guys go win this thing.”
Louisville’s Kevin Ware delivered an inspiring message to his Cardinals teammates after he broke his leg in the Elite Eight game against Duke.
He was lying in front of the Louisville bench in the first half. His right leg was so badly broken that the bone was showing through his skin. Ware called his teammates over.
“Don’t worry about me,” Ware said according to CBS’ Tracy Wolfson. “I’ll be okay, you guys go win this thing.”
Ware broke his leg after he jumped in the air to defend a three-point shot by Duke guard Tyler Thornton midway through the first half of the NCAA Midwest Region final.
Despite all that pain, Ware was able to inspire his teammates.
Louisville beat Duke 85-63 and advanced to the Final Four in Atlanta. That’s where Ware is from.
Coach Rick Pitino said Louisville players and coaches reminded each other during every timeout that the goal was to bring Ware home.
“We won this for him,” Pitino told Wolfson. “We’re all choked up with emotion for him. We wanted to get back to Atlanta.”
Louisville forward Chane Behanan even took off his own jersey and wore Ware’s No. 5 jersey.
Ware broke his leg in two places. Surgeons inserted a rod into his right shinbone.
